Seychelles
Chelsea: In the middle of the Indian Ocean, the Seychelles are a bit far for American travelers, unless of course you have just come from Kenya. These 115 islands are an equatorial paradise. The language is creole, the food is decent, and the beaches are sublime. I recall these islands from a visit with my parents and sister, Lucy, in 1991. In the intervening years, the islands have become more developed and more expensive, and sadly, over 50 percent of the coral reefs have died. Nonetheless, it is beautiful, and we enjoyed snorkeling, scuba diving, and lots of R&R.

The Seychelles are home to giant land tortoises, most of them on the island of Praslin. We had lunch with them. On Mahe Island, the Vallee du Mer is a protected remnant of a giant coconut palm forest. A visit there leaves you feeling very Lilliputian.
On Mahe, we rented an apartment on the beach. It was a bit hard to focus on homework, but what a front stoop!
We took a boat to a marine park for snorkeling, and spent another afternoon underwater in our scuba gear! Tashi and Miles are getting very comfortable with the fish!
